GRAMMY NOMINATED | Best Bluegrass Album - 2012 Scratch Gravel Road

Special Consensus is a superb bluegrass outfit in a classic vein but with more than enough modern sensibilities to attract every ear in this now pleasantly fractionating genre. The vocals are spotless, the playing as shiny as a newly minted penny, and music like this is the reason people come to love bluegrass… Special Consensus approaches this hallowed American musical form with boundless energy and an aesthetic reverence that tickles the ribs, tugs at the heart, and puts a restless two-step in boots and bare feet…

Rivers And Roads is the 19th Special C recording and features songs about life’s journeys with a tip of the hat to Renaissance Man/musician/songwriter John Hartford. Band members Greg Cahill, Rick Faris, Dan Eubanks and Nick Dumas are joined by special guests Bobby Osborne, Becky Buller and Josh Williams on “She Took The Tennessee River;” Molly Tuttle on “Hurting Sure;” Justin Moses on “Bought And Sold;” the dancing feet of Mark Schatz on the John Hartford song “Way Down The River Road” and John Hartford, 10 String Symphony and producer Alison Brown on “Squirrel Hunters.”

Please join us on Saturday Nov 17 at Down Home Guitars in Frankfort, IL to celebrate with us and with Steve on our 10 year anniversary of playing this annual “Saturday Before Thanksgiving” concert. We were both very honored to receive International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards in September: Special C won the Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year award and also the Album of the Year award and the Frankfort Bluegrass On The Green Bluegrass Festival won the Event of the Year award. We can never thank Steve enough for all he does to promote bluegrass music in the region – he sponsors many workshops and concerts throughout the year and were it not for him and a cadre of wonderful volunteers the Bluegrass on the Green festival would not exist. Come celebrate with us!

THANK YOU!!! We won TWO International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards last Thursday night!!! Squirrel Hunters won Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year and then our album Rivers & Roads won Album of the Year!!! What a night! Thank you to Compass Records, to our fabulous producer Alison Brown, to all of our friends who performed on the recording with us and to everyone who voted for us. Congratulations to all the nominees and to all of the other award winners.

Our new Rivers and Roads Compass Records recording is #1 on the September Bluegrass Unlimited Top 15 Albums chart. Yahoo!

We dropped in to visit our good buds the Chapmans at their store in Springfield, MO, called The Acoustic Shoppe. We had an absolute blast recording an episode of their video series The Ozark Music Shoppe – you can see it here:

Wild and crazy guys!

March 30 was “Rivers and Roads” release day! We are so happy to have the CDs in hand and we thank Compass Records for all they have done to make and promote the recording. CDs are now available from us at our performances and on our Store page on this site. Greg played Alison Brown’s Julia Belle (low tuned) Deering banjo on the John Hartford song Way Down The River Road and Deering Banjos posted the song complete with lyrics on their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/deering.banjo/posts/10155694909986234. And here is a link to the photo video with lyrics for the song “Early” on FB: https://business.facebook.com/special.consensus/videos/1901498156560965/. Finally, here is the link to Justin Hiltner’s post for The Bluegrass Situation that included the tune “Squirrel Hunters”:  https:/thebluegrasssituation.com/read/special-consensus-squirrel-hunters
