Special Consensus
Celebrating 50 Years of Bluegrass Excellence!

2012 and 2018 GRAMMY Nominee

Special Consensus celebrated its milestone 50th anniversary in 2025, marking five decades as one of bluegrass music’s most respected and enduring bands. Led by founder Greg Cahill, the group continues to deliver a vibrant contemporary bluegrass sound deeply rooted in tradition while remaining committed to innovation and musical excellence. Over the years, Special C has released 22 recordings and received two Grammy nominations and eight International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards. In June 2025, the band released its newest album, Been All Around This World, on the Nashville-based Compass Records label to celebrate its Golden Anniversary.

Greg Cahill, a recipient of the prestigious IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award and an inductee into the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) Hall of Greats, has guided the band through five decades of growth and success. The band's longevity and continued relevance are a testament to its enduring artistry, influence, and dedication to the bluegrass tradition.

Special Consensus’ sound is grounded in a deep appreciation and understanding of bluegrass music, incorporating both the drive and harmonies of the traditional sound with the contemporary influences and repertoire of today. With the foundation of Greg’s unique banjo style and the vocal prowess of 2023 and 2025 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year Greg Blake (guitar and vocals), Brian McCarty (mandolin and vocals), and Nico Humby (bass and vocals), the band maintains its bluegrass center whether performing a jazz-tinged instrumental or a song from its award-winning catalog. These four talented vocalists and instrumentalists follow their creative instincts without straying far from their roots.

Scratch Gravel Road, the band’s second recording for Compass Records, received a nomination for the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.

Rivers and Roads, the band’s nineteenth recording, was nominated for the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and was honored as the 2018 IBMA Album of the Year. The track “Squirrel Hunters” from that project also received the IBMA Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year Award.

International tours have taken Special Consensus to Australia, Canada, Europe, Ireland, South America, and the United Kingdom. The band has appeared on National Public Radio, The Nashville Network, and the Grand Ole Opry at both the historic Ryman Auditorium and Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee, as well as in concert with symphony orchestras throughout the United States and Canada.

Dedicated to preserving the music while keeping it relevant for future generations, Special Consensus launched the Traditional American Music (TAM) Program in 1984. The educational initiative introduces bluegrass music to students in schools throughout the United States and internationally.

The band proudly records for Compass Records. Its 2020 release, Chicago Barn Dance, celebrated the group’s 45th anniversary while honoring Chicago’s important role in the history of country and bluegrass music through the WLS National Barn Dance, a precursor to the Grand Ole Opry. The title track earned the 2020 IBMA Song of the Year Award.

Compass Records released Great Blue North, the band’s 21st recording, in May 2023. Created as a tribute to the band’s many Canadian friends and fans, the project featured songs written by Canadian songwriters and guest appearances from numerous Canadian musicians. The Gordon Lightfoot classic “Alberta Bound” received the 2023 IBMA Collaborative Recording of the Year Award, while its video earned the first-ever 2024 IBMA Video of the Year Award.

Released in June 2025, Been All Around This World commemorates Special Consensus’ Golden Anniversary with appearances by former members Rick Faris, Ashby Frank, Robbie Fulks, Chris Jones, Dallas Wayne, and Josh Williams, alongside current members Greg Cahill, Greg Blake, and Brian McCarty. The recording serves as both a celebration of the band’s remarkable 50-year journey and a tribute to the music and musicians who have shaped Special Consensus since 1975.

BRIAN MCCARTY

Mandolin and Vocals

Brian McCarty grew up in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The son of a prolific gospel songwriter and singer, he was immersed in the world of music from birth. He first performed with his mother's gospel band at the age of 7 and soon began competing as a vocalist in regional gospel music conventions. His love of traditional American music began when a family member handed him a mandolin at age 13. Brian soon added banjo and guitar to his instrumental prowess and won the 2005 International Bluegrass Artist of the Year award in the Branson-based CGMA. He has played with numerous bands in the Kansas City area over the past two decades, including 15 years as mandolinist for the Bluegrass Missourians. Brian appeared on four recordings with that band and on “The View from Home,” a recording with Greg Blake and Hometown in 2022. For the last two years he has been mandolinist for The Matchsellers, a Kansas City-based band with whom he appeared on two recordings in 2022 and 2024. Brian currently offers mandolin lessons in the Kansas City area and occasionally performs old “brother duets” with banjo player Todd Davis, billed as Davis and McCarty. He resides in Kansas City with his wife Mandy and their two daughters and he joined Special C in 2024.
